Link Roundup: Apple buying GoPro, the Hump, Huawei Watch on Sale

As Christmas Day nears, three top brands are on the top of people’s wishlists: Apple, GoPro, and Huawei (or specifically, the Huawei Watch). So what’s the latest news on these brands and is it the right time to purchase from them? Let’s find out on this week’s link roundup.

Is Apple going to buy GoPro?

It’s been a crazy rollercoaster ride for GoPro the past week, as the action camera manufacturer became the rumored subject of an Apple buyout—only to end the week on a lower note.

On Thursday, Daniel Ives of investment bank FBR & Co., included GoPro in a list of four companies that Apple could buy. It joins Adobe Systems Inc., Box Inc., and Tesla Motors Inc. And with more news about its drone to be released next year, Bloomberg reports that GoPro stock went up by 12 percent.

However, Citi analyst Jeremy David put a damper on these predictions on Friday, as the bank lowered the credit rating for GoPro. The analysis goes on to say that the buyout is unlikely, as GoPro owns only 56 patents; not enough for Apple to consider buying the company. The analysis also predicts that there is a softening demand for GoPro products themselves. And as reported by Forbes, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman should be interested in selling the company in the first place.

With all that said, now seems like a good time to get your hands on a GoPro, as low demand means more discounts. The GoPro line is currently on sale at YouPoundit, with the GoPro Hero4 Silver Edition going for PHP 18,891 (original price PHP 20,990) and the GoPro Hero4 Black Edition available at PHP 23,391 (original price PHP 25,990).

The Apple hump: Not a flaw, but a feature

To address all those complaints about the iPhone’s short battery life, Apple released a smart case—a case for the iPhone with an integrated power bank—last Tuesday. Suffice to say, it didn’t exactly get a great reception from the Internet, as its design was criticized for looking like a bulge.

Speaking to Mashable at the Hour of Code event last Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook defended the case, saying it was designed as such to make it easy to put on or take off the phone. From the article:

“If you make this solid all the way across,” said Cook, indicating the spots where the Apple case’s embedded battery stops and you just have the soft fluoroelastomer casing, “in order to get it on, you’d find it very difficult to get it on and off.”

If you’re still not happy with the design (like many of us online), you can just get a good ol’ powerbank instead. Check out some options here.

Huawei Watches still available; Honor to be introduced in US by 2016

There were some reports last week that the Huawei Watch is now sold out in retail stores. If you’re one of the unlucky ones who weren’t able to grab the watch, we’re happy to report that we still have them at limited stocks on YouPoundit. The popular Android smartwatch is currently retailing from PHP 19,990 for the Classic version to PHP 23,990 for the Active version in our Wearable Tech section.

On the other hand, the US is late to the party. Android Authority reports that the Honor smartphone line will be only released there next month at CES 2016. So if you’re looking for a great smartphone, forget about looking overseas; just buy the Honor 6 Plus here.
